The vitamin imperative...

Performing a plethora of roles to maintain good health and promote cellular development, vitamins are essential nutrients that we absolutely cannot live without. Yet there are so many that perform amazing functions that we’re not even aware of, that is… until we don’t get sufficient amounts and health problems suddenly start occurring.

Vitamins are characterized by the following:

⇒⇒  They’re found naturally in food, in varying amounts.
⇒⇒  They cannot be made by the body (with the exception of vitamin D after sun exposure).
⇒⇒  They are organic in their structure and in their natural state, can be readily metabolized by the body. But… when they are broken down by air, heat or acid, it becomes much more difficult for your body to absorb them. Therefore, cooking, storage… and even exposure to air… affects their chemical structure.
⇒⇒  They’re absolutely essential for the normal, healthy develop-ment and functioning of all your cells.
⇒⇒  When vitamins become depleted from the diet, it can cause health-threatening deficiencies. weakness, easy bruising, lowered immunity, fatigue, shortness of breath, and much more serious conditions.

Some of the most common symptoms of vitamin deficiency are…

  hair loss
◊  oral health problems
◊  muscle weakness
◊  fatigue
◊  shortness of breath
◊  dizziness
◊  irregular heartbeats
◊  mental fogginess
◊  muscle cramps in the calves and arches of the feet

The 13 essentials… what they are; why you need them

They don’t provide energy, like carbohydrates, proteins and fats, but without these 13 mysterious little “magic-makers”, you’ll likely feel lethargic, be vulnerable to myriad infections, and could develop a multitude of serious complications that could endanger your health and even your life! They’re called vitamins… and without them, none of us would be here!
There are 13 essential vitamins which are divided into 2 categories:

Water-soluble

Biotin (vitamin B7)
• Folic acid (folate,vitamin B9)
• Niacin (vitamin B3)
• Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5)
• Riboflavin (vitamin B2)
• Thiamin (vitamin B1)
• Vitamin B6
• Vitamin B12
• Vitamin C

Water-soluble vitamins need to be replenished on a daily basis since they’re easily absorbed into the bloodstream as food is digested or supplements are dissolved. Present in the watery sections of the food you eat, water-soluble vitamins are continuously regulated via your kidneys. Any excess is flushed out with urine.

Water soluble vitamins:

⇒⇒  produce and release energy
⇒⇒  boost immunity
⇒⇒  maintain tissue health
⇒⇒  build proteins and cells
⇒⇒  produce collagen present in skin cells, blood vessel walls and gums that aids in the process of healing wounds

Fat-soluble

• Vitamin A
• Vitamin D
• Vitamin E
• Vitamin K

In general, people are more likely to become deficient in fat-soluble vitamins, yet taking them in many commercially available synthetic supplements for prolonged periods of time can be toxic and very harmful to your health.

These vitamins aren’t as easily transported through the body as water-soluble vitamins and usually need a protein carrier to facilitate their movement throughout the body. . They’re absorbed through the intestinal wall, then they enter the lymph vessels before making their way into the bloodstream. Any excess is stored in the liver and fat tissues for up to 6 months.

Fat -soluble vitamins:

⇒⇒  protect vision
⇒⇒  build bones
⇒⇒  protect the body against illnesses, diseases, and free radical damage
⇒⇒  promote proper blood clotting
⇒⇒  help form healthy red blood cells
⇒⇒  interact together favorably to enhance absorption

Vitamin deficiencies

Unfortunately, nutrient deficiencies are extremely common. They can… and often do… lead to major disease and chronic illness. A common example is osteoporosis, a condition characterized by brittle bones, often the result of a vitamin D and/or calcium deficiency. So if you think you might have a nutritional deficiency… and most Americans do… take a step to protect your health… take Shaklee!

People who are at most risk for nutritional deficiencies are…

 the elderly
♦ athletes who train intensively for long periods of time
those who subsist largely on processed or fast foods
smokers, heavy drinkers or those who take a lot of drugs of any kind

The primary causes of nutritional deficiencies are…

 poor diet
 digestive problems
 chronic stress

According to Tricia L. Psota, PhD, RDN, a lecturer at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health in Washington, DC, “Nutrient deficiencies alter bodily functions and processes at the most basic cellular level. These processes include water balance, enzyme function, nerve signaling, digestion, and metabolism. Resolving these deficiencies is important for optimal growth, development, and function.”

Natural remedies for aching feet…

Foot pain is something that we have all experienced. After a long day at work, shopping, or yard work, your feet can be tired, achy, swollen, and heavy.

Good news! You aren’t doomed to suffer this pain with no relief. Here are some natural remedies that will ease your sore feet and have you feeling great again.

Alternate hot and cold

Soaking your feet in alternating hot and cold water for 5 minutes at a time dilates and constricts blood vessels, boosting circulation and reducing swelling and achiness. Alternate for a total of thirty minutes for maximum effectiveness.

Elevate your feet

Elevating your feet for fifteen to twenty minutes will increase circulation and help reduce pain and swelling.

Use Epsom salt

Epsom salt is made of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. Magnesium helps reduce swelling, easing pain. You can fill a basin with hot water, add Epsom salt and soak just your feet or, if you are looking to relax your entire body, you can fill your bathtub with hot water, add Epsom salt, and soak your whole body for forty-five minutes to an hour. What relief!

O-h-h-h Shaklee!

After you’ve soaked and/or elevated your feet, pamper them with Herbal Blend Multi-Purpose Cream. There’s a very good reason Dr. Shaklee originally named it “Foot Cream” …your toes, soles, arches and heels will love it!

Herbal Blend Multi-Purpose Cream

Dry, chapped, rough skin is no match for this soothing cream, which softens even the hardest, callused skin on knees, elbows, and feet. Its cooling, mentholated, non-greasy formula vanishes as you massage it in, leaving skin feeling smooth and refreshed.

Enriched with natural extracts, including rosemary, chamomile, corn oil, and salvia to nourish stressed skin, this luxurious formula is perfect for soothing dry, chapped and rough skin on knees, elbows and feet.
