“Start your [health] rebuilding plan… by adopting a cleansing program. Suppose you were going to reconstruct an old building. Would you simply add some extra braces here and there? No, I think you would start by cleaning out the accumulated rubbish. Well, that is precisely what you should do with your body. You certainly don’t want to cover up any of the disease-causing poisonous waste and allow it to contaminate your newly constructed cells, so your first effort should be directed toward your house-cleaning program. Practice weekly cleansing periods until you KNOW your system is clean.”
~ A Study Course in Nutrition by Forrest Shaklee Sr., DC, DD
Uh-oh! Gotta go!!!
We’ve all had those irritating (and sometimes embarrassing) moments when we had to break away from a conversation, intimate moment, meeting or other social activity to run to the bathroom.
If it happens once in awhile, it may not be significant. But, if digestive issues continuously embarrass you and make you frantically look for a way to leave a situation, it might have a negative impact on your life.
A continuous and irritating digestive problem might mean you have a serious health issue that should be addressed immediately by your healthcare professional.
Digestive problems are part of the wide array of embarrassing health issues that we don’t want to talk about… but, we must.
Even though your symptoms may not appear to be life-threatening, there may be issues occurring in your body stemming from a problem that could be simply cured or dealt with so it doesn’t get worse.
The digestive system…
The hollow organs that make up the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of the digestive system are the…
♦♦ mouth (salivary glands)
♦♦ esophagus
♦♦ stomach
♦♦ small intestine
♦♦ large intestine
♦♦ rectum and
♦♦ anus
The solid organs of the digestive system are the…
♦♦ liver
♦♦ pancreas and
♦♦ gall bladder
Do you have any of these digestive problems?
Embarrassing digestive issues affect everyone sooner or later. Diarrhea, gas, stomach pain or cramps, heartburn (GERD), Irritable Bowel Disorder (IBD) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are all digestive issues which could cause embarrassment.
Treatment for these unpleasant problems often include lifestyle changes… clean eating, reducing stress and taking supplements… or medication when needed. Even if gas or diarrhea aren’t the most exciting things to think about, you should know about them and what you can do to relieve the symptoms.
For example, you should know that IBD is different from IBS. IBD is defined as a structural disease, which means the symptoms are caused by some type of physical damage. Ulcers, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are all IBD conditions. IBS is a functional disease, meaning symptoms are present but no physical problem is found.
Both IBD and IBS cause constipation, bloating, diarrhea and stomach pain and may also include blood in the stool, inflammation… especially in the joints, eyes or skin… fever, and weight loss.
Treatment for both usually includes drugs or surgery.
Heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is painful and is difficult to deal with. With acid reflux, the stomach acid flows into the esophagus (the tube connecting the throat and stomach) causing heartburn, a symptom of GERD.
If you have heartburn, avoid certain foods such as chocolate, citrus, garlic, onion and spicy foods just before bedtime. Try eating smaller meals throughout the day. If you smoke, quit. If you’re overweight try to lose the excess with diet and exercise. You can also try placing blocks under the head of the bed to raise it a few inches while you sleep.
Gas, belching and bloating are also uncomfortable and embarrassing conditions. Most of the time, all three conditions are either caused by swallowing air or by the way your food breaks down during digestion.
When built-up gas isn’t passed out of the system by flatulence or belching, it will likely gather in the stomach or intestines and cause bloating and pain.
You can help relieve the problems of gas, belching and bloating by avoiding eating fatty foods on an empty stomach, stress and anxiety, smoking, drinking carbonated beverages or eating gassy foods such as beans, cabbage and onions.
Be aware that these conditions may also be caused by a disease, blockage or infection of the gastrointestinal tract, IBS, or other problems in the gut. If changes in your lifestyle and medications don’t help your situation, see your healthcare practitioner for a complete checkup.
When your gut hurts… think Healthy Cleanse!
More serious digestive issues…
There are numerous digestive issues that go beyond the norm of common digestive problems and need further diagnosis. For example, peptic ulcers can cause horrible stomach pain, often further exacerbated by taking painkillers. Over 25 million Americans will suffer from peptic ulcers at some point, often caused by smoking, alcohol consumption or stress.
Diverticulosis is more common in those Americans older than age 70, but only about 20% of those with the condition will experience complications. Diverticulosis occurs when a diverticula (abnormal bulge) protrudes from the intestinal wall. The bulge may become inflamed or infected (diverticulisis) and cause severe pain.
Gallstones almost always require treatment. Gallstones are largely made from bile salts and cholesterol. Sometimes these stones become stuck in the ducts between the small intestine and the liver, blocking the flow of bile, often causing inflammation or infection. Gallstones are often caused by a lack of fiber and excess fat in the diet. The usual treatment is to remove the gallbladder by surgery… one of the most common procedures in medicine.
Lactose intolerance is a condition caused by the lack of an enzyme (lactase) needed for digestion of the sugar found in milk. Symptoms include bloating, gas, nausea, cramping and diarrhea. An enzyme supplement like EZ-Gest can help.
