“Of one thing you may be sure… Nature intended that you be well and strong with sufficient resistance to ward off diseases. NATURE WORKS FOR YOU, NEVER AGAINST YOU! But you must allow her to do so.“
~ Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee, Sr.
The future of health & wellness…
Shaklee recently completed an important project… The Shaklee U.S. Health & Wellness Study.* It focused on the nation’s largest adult demographic group… millennials… those individuals born between 1982 and 1996. Shaklee wanted to know how this group was faring… both physically and emotionally… while dealing with the unprecedented threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal was to better understand the challenges and opportunities to improve health and wellness for everyone during this trying time. The results were revealing:
____ 70% of millennials are more concerned with personal health
and wellness now than prior to the pandemic
____ 60% of millennials are “more stressed out than ever before”
____ 58% are concerned that they may now have “permanently
low energy levels”
____ 94% want to make health and wellness a priority in the
coming year
As you examine the study results, put a checkmark √ by those responses that apply to you.
*Study participants: 2,000 adults in the U.S. between the ages of 22 and 39 years
What Is “healthy”?
Shaklee wanted to know how millennials defined “being healthy”. This was their response:
____ 57% defined “healthy” as feeling physically strong
____ 54% said it was feeling good inside and out
____ 51% described it as feeling mentally and/or emotionally at ease (no anxiety or stress)
____ 42% stated that it was feeling financially secure
So… what does “healthy” mean to you?
The greatest threat to healthy living…
Have you guessed what millennials sited as the number one risk to their overall health? Yes… it’s stress!
Stress can have a profound impact on your health. Here are just a few ways that stress can affect you:
Digestive problems
The digestive organs tend to take the brunt of our stress, which is why it’s often blamed for causing ulcers.
Stomach pain, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and other digestive disorders can be the result of stress. The “fight or flight” response, often triggered when the body is under stress, affects the digestive organs by temporarily shutting them down, a nightmare if stress is chronic.
Reproductive issues
Excessive stress disrupts hormones in both men and women. Women may experience menstrual irregularities, acne, problems in pregnancy or difficulties becoming pregnant. Men may experience impotency or other sexual dysfunction.
Heart Disease
The “fight or flight” response also affects heart function. When your heart becomes stressed, you’re more prone to develop heart disease. Stress can also exacerbate or even trigger the mechanisms that produce atherosclerosis… a narrowing of the arterial walls that result in decreased blood flow.
Upper respiratory illness
Stress decreases the immune response and suppresses the immune system, leaving you open to infections and illness, particularly colds and flu, and more recently, COVID-19.
Weight gain
Stress triggers the production of cortisol (the stress hormone), which can slow your metabolism, making weight loss difficult if not impossible. Stress can also activate a craving for sugary foods, making weight gain more probable.
Stress-related weight gain can also result in a host of other health problems associated with obesity: diabetes, joint problems, and perhaps even cancer.
Acute anxiety
Stress may also manifest in nervous behavior, excessive worry, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, or any number of anxiety disorders.
To help combat the health effects of stress, supplement with:
Stress Relief Complex. A combination of L-theanine, ashwagandha, beta-sitosterol, and L-tyrosine helps relax the body and mind.
B-Complex. Known as the “anti-stress vitamins”, they help balance mood and calm the nervous system.
Sustained Release Vita-C or Chewable Vita-C. The adrenal glands contain the largest store of vitamin C in the body and are important in the production of stress hormones.
Sustained Release VitalMag. Magnesium helps to relax muscles and reduce anxiety.
The Study: Health and wellness routines
____ 50% of respondents believe they can improve their wellness by eating a healthier diet.
This is followed by:
____ 46% Getting more sleep
____ 47% Exercising more
____ 45% Reducing stress
The Study: Top sources of stress
Stress is a perennial challenge to our health and wellness. It’s been linked to such conditions as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other illnesses, including mental disorders such as depression or anxiety. Here’s what most stresses millennials:
____ 34% The pandemic
____ 33% Cleaning
____ 32% The economy
____ 31% Work
____ 30% Taking care of kids
Signs that you’re too stressed…
____ People in your life have started commenting that you seem stressed.
____ You feel restless… struggling to fall asleep at night or staying still during business meetings.
____ You’re getting more headaches… one of the physical signs that you are under too much stress.
____ You’re feeling more tired, which could be a sign that you need to start controlling your stress levels.
____ Your self-esteem has cratered. You used to feel good about yourself but now you’re feeling negative. Noticing this sign will help you seek support and combat the symptoms of stress early on.

How the pandemic affects sleep cycles…
According to behavioral sleep medicine psychologist Michelle Drerup, PsyD, “Stress impacts every area of our life so, of course, it’s going to impact sleep,” she adds. “And that is even further complicated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that’s consumed our lives for much of the last few years.”
Without a doubt, stress and anxiety levels escalated dramatically during the pandemic for many reasons, including solitude, financial difficulties, managing work and school, as well as navigating parenting difficulties.
All of this tension… combined with lack of sleep… can have a huge, negative influence on your general health and wellness.
One major concern that is specific to the pandemic, Dr. Drerup says, is the impact on our immune system. “When someone is chronically sleep-deprived,” she states, “they tend to have lowered immunity which makes our susceptibility to viruses higher.”
So… correcting your sleep issues will also increase your
The rest of your body can also suffer from loss of sleep, leading to metabolic disorders, cardiovascular concerns, an increased risk of weight gain, diabetic issues and hypertension.immunity! What a deal!
Tips to combat COVID-related sleep issues
____ Turn off the news. If you don’t know what’s happening, you can’t obsess about it.
____ Keep a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.
____ Open the windows. Research shows that we all sleep best when cold, ideally between 60° and 67° F.
____ Take Dream Serene with melatonin* 30 minutes before retiring.
*Melatonin is a hormone, produced naturally in the body, that helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Darkness increases melatonin production, preparing the body for sleep.
