“Old age is only a mythical state of being, arbitrarily invented by your own process of mind. Haven’t you seen individuals who were old at forty, while others are young at eighty?

Old age, then, is a combination of mental attitude and physical wellbeing. Either one may be in the plus or in the minus column of your life’s ledger. Regardless of the column in which it appears, you are responsible for its appearance there. And you CAN make new entries in that ledger regardless of your age.”

~ Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee, Sr.

Slow, gentle aging…

According to Robert Kail and John Cavanaugh, in their book, “Human Development: A Life-Span View”, both men and women reach their overall physical peak in their late 20’s to early 30’s. After that, physical strength begins a gradual decline and will continue to do so throughout the rest of life.

In spite of remarkable advances in the research and science of aging, the exact mechanisms behind the aging process and the inevitable decline humans experience is still not well understood by the medical profession. One hypotheses is that regular “wear and tear” actually exceeds the repairative capacity of human tissues.

However, the generally accepted effects of aging DO NOT need to apply to you! There is a wide range of individual differences in functional status at any given age, many of which you can control.

In fact, when it comes to maximum oxygen intake, flexibility and muscle strength a very fit 70, 75, or even 85 year old can outperform a 27 or 30 year old couch potato.

This means that our physical and biological status is often more determined by our lifestyle choices than by chronological age.

Some aging effects…

Atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis progressively decrease oxygen supply to the tissues, and in some vital organs, such as the brain, humans lose cells every single day that will never be replaced.

According to the Encyclopedia of Sports Medicine and Science, cells in other tissues of the body actually change as we age. For example, cross-linkages develop between adjacent collagen fibrils which decreases their elasticity and results in overall progressive age related biological deterioration.

How to slo-o-o-w do-o-o-wn cellular aging…

When we think about the effects of aging, most of the time we think of the changes to our appearance, physical abilities, and cognitive functions. While these effects are the most noticeable, we don’t often think about aging at the cellular level. Cellular aging actually plays a significant role in our overall health. So, let’s take a closer look at what cellular aging is and how we can combat it (no microscope needed).

Understanding cellular aging

Your body is made of trillions of cells, but every day your cells come under attack by many factors like diet, stress, UV rays, and toxins that can increase oxidative stress. When your cells come under attack, free radicals are formed that can damage cell components like DNA and trigger inflammatory reactions that contribute to cellular aging. Many scientists believe that this daily cellular damage may be a key factor in many age-related health conditions.

Combating cellular aging

Keeping your cells vital and strong is a daily task, and a good way to start is by addressing factors like diet and stress. Eating a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids and low in refined starches, sugar, and saturated and trans-fatty acids helps combat cellular aging. Lowering your stress can also help your cells and maximize wellness.

But there is a key nutrient that helps combat cellular aging… polyphenols… plant-based nutrients that have antioxidant benefits and protective effects against cellular aging. They can be found in many fruits, vegetables, green and black tea, red wine, coffee, chocolate, and olives. And one great way to get polyphenols is to supplement with Vivix.

How Vivix slows the aging process

Vivix contains a proprietary, all-natural blend of polyphenols based on the muscadine grape, one of nature’s rarest, most potent grapes. Its key ingredients have been shown in laboratory studies to activate cells’ defenses, neutralize free radicals, and protect against cell damage. Vivix also has a positive impact on cellular energy production. The mitochondria of your cells generate energy but decline as you age. Key ingredients in Vivix have been shown to increase the mitochondrial mass.

When it comes to combating the effects of aging, it’s best to start from the inside. So… take care of your health and the health of your cells!

When it comes to skin care, ingredients matter!

Most of us are very conscious about using healthy ingredients in our diet. But what about the products we put on our skin? While we don’t always think about the ingredients in our lotions, cleansers, and moisturizers, what we use on our body is just as important as what we put in it. Here’s why it’s a good idea to choose skin care with clean ingredients.

From the outside in

According to studies done by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), women can put an average of 168 chemicals on their body through their skin care every day. While it’s hard to believe, the FDA doesn’t regulate chemicals in skin care and hasn’t passed a law on personal care products since 1938. In fact, there are only 11 cosmetic ingredients banned by the FDA, while in the EU, over 1,300 ingredients are banned.

Actually, most of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body. This means that any harmful ingredients in skin care products can potentially damage your skin and can even enter your bloodstream. For example, some cleansers contain petroleum and paraffins that contain toxins and can clog pores. A safer alternative would be YOUTH Luminous Gel Oil Cleanser, which uses exfoliating green algae and avocado oil to calm and hydrate skin.

Allergens and sensitivities

Skin care products can contain allergens, so you’ll want to pay attention if certain products cause itching or rashes. Even if you don’t have allergic reactions, your skin may still be sensitive to common skin care ingredients, especially if it contains any acid. Your best bet is to go with “clean beauty” skin care such as the YOUTH product line.

Clean beauty

A “clean” beauty product is anything that does not contain harmful ingredients that are commonly found in skin care products… ingredients like parabens, phthalates, PEG derivatives, and artificial colors and fragrances. Ideally clean beauty contains ingredients that are naturally derived. Radiance C+E, for example, uses vitamin C and E and raspberry cell extract to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. And for moisturizing and hydrating skin, Moisture Lock Day Cream and Moisture Activating Serum use a formula made with botanical ingredients, including cactus extract, muscadine grape, Lotus Japonicus, and Schisandra Chinensis. The best thing about clean beauty is that it prioritizes not only the look but also the health of your skin. Simply put, switching to all-natural ingredients gives you peace of mind.

So… are you ready to clean up your skin care routine with products that use safe ingredients? If you need some ideas, the entire YOUTH skin care line is FREE of over 2,500 harmful chemicals and questionable ingredients commonly found in skin care products. And remember… skin care ingredients matter because your health matters the most!

When to make the switch to YOUTH clean beauty

SWITCH TO YOUTH if you’re trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If chemicals from skin care ingredients can penetrate your bloodstream, they can reach your baby as it develops.

SWITCH TO YOUTH if you care about the environment. Not only is natural skin care better for your body, it’s better for the environment. Every time you use products high in potentially harmful chemicals, they’re being washed down the drain into local waterways, which harms the environment.

SWITCH TO YOUTH if you care about chemicals getting into your bloodstream. In fact, everyone should be concerned about this!
So… let’s take the best care of our skin with YOUTH!

How to choose a truly “green” household cleaner

It’s shocking how “dirty” some household cleaners can actually be. Many contain phosphates, nitrates, chlorine bleach, ammonia, or formaldehyde… chemicals that are potentially toxic and can produce harmful fumes… presenting a danger to your home and our planet. A large European multicenter study showed that regular use of cleaning sprays over a 20 year period was associated with a more rapid decline in lung function.* With over 80,000 chemicals in widespread commercial use and many making their way into cleaning products (often without being tested first), it makes sense to switch to green cleaners.

While many brands claim to be “natural” or “green,” it’s important to know what truly makes a cleaner safe for you and your home. Here’s what to look for in a green cleaning product:
Truly green cleaners are ones that keep your health and the environment in mind. They shouldn’t leave behind any toxic chemicals or fumes. Green cleaners should be natural with sustainably sourced ingredients and biodegradable surfactants. And to help our planet, green cleaners should reduce waste through recyclable packaging, concentrated formulas, or both. And… they should be free of bleach, chlorine, or fragrances.

Shaklee household cleaners hit all the marks for green cleaning. Make the switch today!
