Be careful of negative thinking; it upsets the body balance. Positive thought brings happiness and contentment.
~ Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee, Sr.
Is it just stress… or is it more?
With our complex lives in the 21st century, more and more people are suffering from stress-related conditions. The negative impact of stress can affect many areas of health. One area in particular that can be adversely affected is the adrenal glands.
The adrenal glands are located near the kidneys and produce the hormones that are needed for the body to function properly. Stress adversely affects these glands because when the body is under severe stress, the adrenals start producing more hormones to help the body cope (the classic ‘fight or flight’ response). The primary adrenal hormone is cortisol, which regulates metabolism and is a response to stress.
In some circumstances a stress response is needed. However, when you experience stress over a long period of time, the adrenals weaken, negatively affecting the body and resulting in adrenal fatigue. So, what are the symptoms of adrenal fatigue?
The best diet for your adrenals…
Here is what you should eat and drink to help heal your adrenal glands:
⇒⇒ Lots of water
⇒⇒ Pumpkin seeds
⇒⇒ Sardines
⇒⇒ Liver
⇒⇒ Grass-fed meat, wild game and wild caught salmon
⇒⇒ Non-starchy vegetables
⇒⇒ Ghee, clarified butter
⇒⇒ Coconut, coconut oil and coconut water
⇒⇒ Avocados
⇒⇒ Olives
⇒⇒ Lean, organic chicken and turkey
⇒⇒ Walnuts and almonds
⇒⇒ Chia and flax seeds
Symptoms of adrenal fatigue…
Are you just tired… or is it something more serious? If you have any of these symptoms, you may have adreneal fatigue:
1) Excessive, unexplained tiredness caused by lack of sleep due to stress.
2) A craving for salty or sugary foods. One way that adrenal fatigue affects the body is to lower the blood sugar level, increasing cravings for sugary foods. Because the body releases more minerals in the urine, adrenal fatigue can also result in cravings for salty foods.
3) Heightened energy in the evenings due to fluctuating cortisol levels.
4) Difficulty in handling stress. The normal body’s response to stress is to release 3 hormones:
♦♦ Cortisol. Gives the body extra energy to cope with the stress, it increases memory function and lowers sensitivity to pain. However, the body needs a rest period after cortisol has been released and a person suffering from adrenal fatigue rarely gets a rest. Therefore, less and less cortisol is produced.
♦♦ Adrenaline. Adrenaline gives us the initial burst of energy needed to respond to stress. Once again, adrenal fatigue will reduce the amount of this hormone, reducing the stress response.
♦♦ Norepinephrine. This hormone helps the brain to focus on the stress. Without this active hormone, the response to stress could be described as lethargic.
5) More infections. Cortisol helps to regulate the immune system in the body and works as an anti-inflammatory. Too much cortisol over an extended period of time hinders the response of the immune system and can result in more infections.
Some other symptoms of adrenal fatigue are:
♦♦ Burnout
♦♦ Anxiety; depression
♦♦ Dizziness; lightheadedness
♦♦ Frustration; anger
♦♦ Physical aches; pains
♦♦ Headaches; migraines
How your adrenals affect your thyroid
Your adrenal glands, when fatigued and overworked, usually from constant stress and anxiety, force your body into a state of catabolism. That fancy scientific term simply means that your body begins to break down in any number of ways. Since your thyroid gland also influences your body’s metabolism, unhappy and unhealthy adrenal glands can cause you to metabolize food improperly.
This can lead to a condition known as hypothyroidism, a slowing down of your metabolism. Hypothyroidism and its relationship to your metabolism can lead to the following health conditions and unfortunate symptoms:
♦♦ Decreased sex drive
♦♦ Fatigue and weakness
♦♦ Abnormal menstrual cycles
♦♦ Irritability and depression
♦♦ Constipation
♦♦ Memory loss
♦♦ Muscle cramps, aches and pains
♦♦ Hair loss
♦♦ Weight gain or an inability to lose weight
♦♦ Course, dry, prematurely aged hair and skin
Because of the relationship between your adrenal glands and thyroid, avoiding all of the health problems just mentioned is possible when you heal your adrenal glands.
Supplements for your adrenals
Flooding your body with B vitamins is a simple way to fight adrenal health problems. Taking Shaklee B-Complex daily is a great way to ensure you have high levels of vitamin B5 and vitamin B6, which are particularly important for healthy adrenal function. Vitamin B12 also aids with energy production.
Supplementing a healthy diet with Vita-D3, VitalMag, Zinc and Vita-E Complex virtually guarantees proper thyroid function and adrenal functioning as well.
And… if you don’t eat foods rich in healthy, fatty acids… or even if you do… add OmegaGuard to your supplement regimen. Your adrenals will thank you!
Confused by myriad mascaras in the store?
Every year consumers report red, scaly eyelids, blood-shot eyes, dry eye disease, and serious long-term health conditions caused by… the toxic chemicals in their eye makeup! And although more than 1,300 chemicals are banned from cosmetics in Europe, only 11 are banned in the U.S.
Here are just 10 of the chemicals you should avoid when you purchase eye shadow, liner, mascara, and even makeup brushes and false-lash adhesive:
1) Carbon black
2) Ethanolamines (DEA, TEA, MEA)
3) Benzalkonium chloride (BAK)
4) Prime yellow carnauba wax
5) Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
6) Parabens
7) Aluminum powder
8) Retinyl acetate or retinyl palmitate
9) Heavy metals such as nickel and chrome
10) Titanium dioxide
