“Brain work requires a great deal of energy. This is why oxygen… and blood sugar… are so essential to the thinker. [Brain cells] must be supplied with protein, vitamins, and minerals, PLUS an unsaturated fat LECITHIN. There is about 3 times as much lecithin found in brain cells as in any other type of cell in the body.
Of the vitamins, the B Vitamins seem to be the most essential. A B Vitamin deficiency leads to mental weariness, and slows down the ability to learn.
Make sure to supply your brain with a WHOLE protein with all of the amino acids present.
And… a high phosphorus supply is a MUST for brain cells.

What’s going on in your brain?

In Shaklee, we think we’re sooooo careful, don’t we? After all, we don’t do the “bad” things which we know will hurt our brains. We avoid the use of drugs. We don’t drink alcohol in excess. We’re even a little more aware of what smoking does to brain cells and make efforts not to experience the effects of smoke and nicotine on our own bodies, even secondhand. And… of course, we take our Shaklee supplements every day!

So… it looks like we’re doing everything right… or are we?

Maybe not. In fact, there’s a good chance you still have a habit or two that are already doing some severe damage to your brain health. For instance, how much sleep do you get? Are you under stress? Do you “multitask”? How about your water intake? What do these questions have to do with the health of your brain? Read on to find out about a “dirty dozen” habits killing brain cells even as you’re reading this newsletter.

The brain in history…

2000 B.C. Archeologists found evidence that primitive brain surgery was performed by drilling a hole in the skull.

1811. Scottish surgeon Charles Bell described how each of the senses had a corresponding spot in the brain.

1899. Aspirin was marketed as a pain reliever, but was not available without a prescription until 1915.

1921. Hermann Rorschach invented the now-famous ink blot test for use with his patients.

1959. The first rhesus monkey was sent into space to study human behavior.

Brain chemistry and the “Dirty Dozen”

Composed of billions of neurons, the brain is a complex organ comprising a mass of grey and white matter responsible for regulating human function.

As the basic building blocks of the brain, neurons connect logical senses with thought and conscious cognition. Electrical signals travel throughout the brain’s network and synapses, creating thoughts and information input. This allows for perception, movement, and other cognitive insights into touch, smell, taste, and auditory function.

This neural communication is possible because of chemicals known as neurotrans-mitters that allow these messages to be sent to other nearby neurons.

However, these complex neural communications can be blurred and negatively impacted by physical trauma, drug abuse, or unhealthy lifestyle practices.

12 habits that cause brain damage…

1) Too much sugar interferes with brain development in children and causes brain fog in adults.

2) Skipping breakfast can cause deteriorating brain function over time. Your brain needs lots of nutrients after a night-long fast.

3) Multitasking, the notion that you can accomplish more if you do two things at the same time, has not only been proven to be mistaken, it actually shrinks the brain.

4) Too much silence, without conversation to stimulate and even grow the brain, can actually shrink gray matter.

5) Inadequate sleep to heal the body and sweep toxins out of the brain, can eventually adversely affect memory and make you more prone to dementia.

6) If you cover your head while sleeping, you deprive your brain of oxygen, killing brain cells with the buildup of carbon dioxide under the blanket.

7) Overeating, especially junk food, hardens the arteries in your brain, slowing down cognitive function.

8) Dehydration keeps your body from flushing out toxins and affects both concentration and memory.

9) Chronic stress changes the shape, size and function of the brain itself, wiping out neurons that regulate emotions, learning, and memory.

10) Staring at electronic screens all day can atrophy the brain. In fact, playing computer games can set up artificial reward responses in your brain, damaging your ability to think, reason and communicate.

11) Pushing your brain too hard can lead to mental exhaustion, cognitive decline, and even permanent damage.

12) Spending too much time indoors harms both physical and mental health. We need green spaces and fresh air and oxygen… lots of it… to avoid fatigue, depression, irritability and loss of mental function.

So… in addition to taking your Shaklee supplements, make sure your lifestyle choices support a healthy brain!

Fascinating brain facts…

The human brain has amazed and baffled people throughout the ages. Here are some things you may not know about this remarkable organ:

♦♦ The weight of the human brain is about 3 lbs.
♦♦ The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain making up 85% of the brain’s weight.
♦♦ The brain is made up of about 75% water.
♦♦ Your brain consists of about 100 billion neurons.
♦♦ There are anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 synapses for each neuron.
♦♦ There are no pain receptors in the brain, so the brain can feel no pain.
♦♦ While an elephant’s brain is physically larger than a human brain, the human brain is 2% of total body weight (compared to 0.15% of an elephant’s brain), meaning humans have the largest brain to body size.
♦♦ There are 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain.
♦♦ The human brain is the fattest organ in the body consisting of at least 60% fat.
♦♦ At birth, your brain was almost the same size as an adult brain and contained most of the brain cells for your whole life.
♦♦ Your brain stopped growing at age 18.
♦♦ Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen and 20% of the circulating blood in your body.
♦♦ A study of one million students in New York showed that students who ate lunches that did not include artificial flavors, preservatives, and dyes did 14% better on IQ tests than students who ate lunches with these additives.

Your brain on Shaklee…

It’s a fact… food consumed regularly… whether healthy or unhealthy… has a significant, measurable effect on the brain. And since the brain operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, fueling it with nutrient-rich food and supplements is imperative.

Here are a few nutrients beneficial for brain health and cognition:

Omega-3 fatty acids

Acting as a natural anti-inflammatory and nitric oxide booster, optimal dosages of omega-3 fatty acids promote blood flow to the brain, improving overall brain function, such as memory, while also decreasing the risk of depression and cognitive conditions such as dementia. You’ll find the correct balance of omega-3’s in Omega-Guard.

Vitamin E

As an antioxidant, vitamin E is an excellent vitamin for brain health and cognition. In fact, it’s recently been proposed as an alternative treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. For optimum absorption and metabolism, choose Vita-E Complex.

L-theanine

Found in both Stress Relief Complex and Dream Serene, l-theanine acts as a mild tranquilizer and aids in the relaxation of the nervous system. Some studies suggest that l-theanine also has the ability to boost memory, mood and cognition.

L-carnitine

Studies suggest that l-carnitine plays several integral roles that promote brain health, including the release of free radicals, the reduction of oxidative stress, and the promotion of cognition and neuroprotection of the developing brain and the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. L-carnitine is also found in Stress Relief Complex and Dream Serene.

Iron

Chronic iron deficiency can lead to anemia, affecting nearly 30% of the world’s population.
Iron’s role in the brain includes oxygen transportation, neurotransmitter metabolism, and DNA synthesis.

If you need an iron boost, rely on Iron plus Vitamin C or Liqui-Lea.

Vitamin B

The B vitamins… particularly B6, B9, and B12… are essential for a healthy functioning brain. In fact, research suggests that the B vitamins are the most important nutrient complex for the brain and it’s function.

Vitamin B12, in particular, is often recommended as a daily supplement for the aging population as a preventative measure for early-onset memory loss and cognitive decline.
Since one of the most important elements necessary for cellular absorption and function is proper B vitamin balance, you can always rely on Shaklee B-Complex.

Lecithin

Lecithin has been shown to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, improves circulation, keeps the liver functioning at its peak, sharpens mental skills, provides more energy, and… canhelp with weight loss.

Each Shaklee Lecithin capsule provides 520 mg of lecithin as well as inositol, which plays a critical role in the regulation of cell metabolism.

Shaklee Lecithin contains no added preservatives, artificial colors or flavors.

DREAM SERENE | Fall Asleep Faster. Wake Up More Rested.
