ry to what you may have heard, dietary supplements are not all the same. And over the years, this fact has surfaced in startling news stories about mislabeling, contamination, and deception:
⇒⇒ In February 2015 the New York Attorney General said popular store brands labe
led as medicinal herbs were checked for DNA genetic fingerprinting from GNC, Walmart, Target and Walgreens… and they flunked. Ginseng was found to be little more than ground garlic and rice; Ginko biloba was powdered radish and wheat; St. John’s wort was cheap houseplant fillers, and; Valerian root was powdered peas and beans.
⇒⇒ In January 2015, a federal court in California issued an injunction shutting down a manufacturer of dietary supplements for failing to verify the identity of every dietary ingredient prior to using the ingredient and that their dietary supplements were misbranded.
⇒⇒ In December 2019, a New York federal district court permanently enjoined several New York companies from “distributing dietary supplements because the supplements were adulterated and misbranded.”
⇒⇒ In February 2020, a study published in the JAMA Network Journal suggested that an alarmingly high percentage of bodybuilding products sold online are mislabeled and contain unapproved drugs.

Supplement ingredients can be derived from plant or animal products, or produced synthetically in a laboratory.
