A study from Rice University shows that 70% of all human beings are infected by candidia-sis, usually referred to as candida. Known as Candida albicans, it can affect any age group, from toddlers to the elderly, males and females.

According to Harvard University infectious disease expert Julia Koehler, “Candida is the predominant fungal infection behind human disease.” She also reports that candida is the causal factor for an incredible 60% of fungal infections that patients acquire when they are in a hospital. Once acquired, as many as 1 in 3 of the infected will die with a bloodstream infection.
Yes, this shape-shifting fungus can be lethal, especially when the immune system is weak. But what exactly is candida? Best known in layman’s terms as a yeast infection, candida is a microscopic organism that inhabits all people. And… when your immune system is weakened, you are at risk for candida overgrowth, a process that occurs when your body fails to keep this single cell organism from reproducing. Unless treated properly (by removing its food source, for example), it quickly moves into multiple body systems and can lead to very serious health concerns.

Your diet and candida

Not only can proper nutrition be used as an effective treatment of candida, but it’s also the best preventative.

The elimination of grains, fruits, sugars, starches and any type of alcohol for 3 to 5 days is a good first step when candida develops. You can also make a vegetable broth from onions, kale, garlic, celery and sea salt. Remove the vegetables and sip the broth throughout the day, for 2 days.
