Health is the opposite of disease. So why not do everything within your power to build health?

~ Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee, Sr.

Take the healthy heart challenge…

It’s just human nature: Most people tend to take their heart for granted… until something goes wrong. Your heart is the most important muscle in your body, beating more than 100,000 times a day to send oxygen-rich blood to all the tissues and cells in your body in order to keep them healthy.

As you age, however, there are a number of things that can compromise the health of your heart and blood vessels. While some of these issues may be hereditary, the good news is that most of them are actually lifestyle-related. By modifying your lifestyle, you can offset any genetic issues and do your best to boost your heart health.

In this newsletter, we will challenge you to improve your heart health using natural methods. While we’ll make suggestions, it is important to set your own goals based on your age, family history, overall condition, and your baseline numbers from your doctor.

Listen to your body…

Here are some ways you can listen to your body so you can have a life that is sustained by good health:

Watch the scale. If you are losing too much weight or packing on the pounds, you may be under stress, causing you to eat an unhealthy diet.

Listen to your gut. If you have diarrhea, constipation or indigestion, add probiotics to replenish the gut with good bacteria.

Watch for stress and fatigue. Don’t crash and burn. Get enough rest and lower your stress level with exercise.

14 days to better heart health…

Unfortunately, many people today focus so much on cancer prevention, that they forget heart disease is the #1 killer worldwide of both men and women!

In the United States, heart health is considered to be a “man’s problem”. While it is true that more than 390,000 men have heart attacks each year, it is also true that more than 271,000 women also experience them. In fact, studies show that women have less favorable outcomes than men because they don’t always exhibit the dramatic symptoms men experience when having a heart attack.

A heart attack is triggered by a severe or complete cutting off of the blood supply to the heart via one of the main coronary arteries. Those with coronary heart disease will often experience a narrowing (stenosis) of the arteries due to cholesterol, which forms plaque. This plaque builds up on the blood vessel walls and leads to hardening of the arteries. Plaque will either cause the vessel to become so narrow that the tissue of the heart is starved of oxygen, or a part of the plaque will break off to form a clot, which can cut off the blood flow completely. If this happens, any heart tissue served by that blocked artery will die, and if enough damage is done, it can lead to severe consequences, including death.

Heart disease kills more men and women each year than the top 10 causes of cancer combined. Even the most lethal of cancers, lung cancer, only kills around 66,000 people per year. While we should not minimize these deaths in any way, heart health should be our first priority.

Fortunately, what is healthy for the heart is healthy for the entire body, effectively lowering the risk of cancer, as well.

So let’s get started with your road to better heart health by challenging you to make one change a day for 14 days.

Day 1) Know your numbers. Start your challenge by looking at the most important numbers you need to know in relation to your current state of health so that you can make informed decisions about your heart healthy goals. You need to know your:
____  blood pressure
____  weight and height
____  blood glucose reading
____  total cholesterol
____  LDL cholesterol
____  HDL cholesterol
____  triglycerides

Once you know these baseline numbers, note them down in a new heart health journal to help you track your progress during the challenge.

Day 2) Start from now. We all tend to be nostalgic about the days when we were younger and more fit. Don’t go there. Start from now.

Jot down in your journal notes your…
____  Age and gender
____  Level of activity
____  Favorite activities
____  Underlying health issues
____  Eating habits, Keep an ongoing food diary of everything you eat so you can spot unhealthy foods.
____  Your stress level
____  How well you’re sleeping
____  If you’ve been feeling sad or anxious recently

Day 3) Set SMART goals. Now you can pinpoint a health goal you wish to achieve. Your priority might be to lower your cholesterol naturally, lose weight, or increase your physical activity. Just choose one as your first heart-healthy SMART goal. SMART stands for:

Day 4) Start with Shaklee. To supercharge your challenge with energy, take Shaklee supplements every day. Start with a basic programs of Vita-Lea, Vitalizer or Life Strip along with Energizing Soy Protein or Life Shake. Add other supplements as your numbers and goals dictate.

Day 5) Start walking. Walking is one of the easiest ways to increase activity, burn more calories, and improve your health. Start slow and gradually walk a little further every day.

Day 6) Take charge of your blood pressure. If your concerned about it, try Shaklee’s Blood Pressure Regimen.

Day 7) Remove temptations. Clean out your pantry. If you keep tempting foods out of the house, you won’t eat them.

Day 8) Make simple changes. You don’t have to give up everything you love. Instead of whole milk, try 2%, 1%, fat-free or even soy. Discover healthy “copycat” recipes from your favorite restaurants, with far fewer calories and harmful ingredients. Cook from scratch whenever possible and pack your own lunches and snacks to take to work.

Day 9) Choose healthy eating. You have a wide range of choices when it comes to adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle. Start with getting rid of processed foods and eating more fruits and veggies. Explore heart-healthy cookbooks. Have fun with food!

Day 10) Choose the best fats. Opt for avocado and other healthy fats such as olive, coconut and grapeseed oil.

Day 11) Aim for antioxidants. Antioxidants help combat wear and tear on the body due to aging and oxidation. In addition to antioxidant-rich foods such as berries and green tea, be sure to take NutriFeron, Vita-C, Vita-E, Garlic Complex and CarotoMax.

Day 12) Move more. Now that you’re in the habit of walking, it’s time to up your game! Exercise science recommends 250 minutes of moderate activity per week for adults, and 2 sessions of strength training. This is the time to add the Pure Performance Fitness Pack to your supplement regimen for maximum energy.

Day 13) Get fond of fish. Eat fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, and sardines a couple of times a week for omega-3 fatty acids that raise HDL cholesterol. If you absolutely hate fish, be sure to take OmegaGuard. It’s so good for your heart!

Day 14) Get enough sleep. All adults should try to get 8 hours of high-quality sleep per night. Sleep deprivation has been shown to be as dangerous as drinking and driving. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, try Gentle Sleep Complex along with OsteoMatrix and Lecithin to soothe frazzled nerve endings.

A final word…

Keep it up! Your heart will thank you!

Are statins for you?

Statins is the name given to a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol. The medical name for statins is HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, that is, drugs which inhibit the action of that particular enzyme in the liver. The theory is that if this enzyme is inhibited, the body will stop producing so much cholesterol itself, and therefore start to use the cholesterol in the food we eat instead.

If dietary cholesterol is used, it clears the bad LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream so it will not have the chance to cling to an artery and start forming arterial plaque, causing hardening of the arteries.

The trouble with this theory is that the liver is a very sensitive organ with a range of functions. Inhibiting that enzyme has been linked to issues with muscle formation and health, and with liver damage, including damage to the part that produces insulin, potentially causing Type 2 diabetes.

But the liver is not the only area of the body affected by the side effects of statins. They can also cause:

♦♦ Muscle pain and damage
♦♦ Liver damage
♦♦ Kidney damage
♦♦ Digestive disorders
♦♦ Skin issues
♦♦ Type 2 diabetes
♦♦ Neurological damage, including Alzheimer’s
♦♦ Heart health issues

Instead, try a plant-based diet and Shaklee’s SmartHeart Cholesterol Regimen before you turn to statins.

Vitamins and minerals for a powerful heart…

Current research results are increasingly emphatic that lifestyle factors are the biggest and most common variable affecting human health. This is especially true regarding heart health and the health of the cardio-vascular system as a whole.

There is a huge silver lining behind this cloud, however. By their very nature, “lifestyle factors” are… choices! You have the power to make choices to greatly improve your heart health by your own positive actions and choices. One of the biggest, if not the biggest, of these is in the realm of diet and supplementation. Here are some of the nutrients critical for a healthy heart:

Magnesium… dissolves calcium so that it cannot deposit on artery walls; helps prevent the heart from going into spasm. VitalMag will make sure you have enough of this essential nutrient.

B vitamins… B3 (niacin) actually raises HDL “good” cholesterol while lowering both LDL “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides. B9 (folic acid) lowers homocysteine. B-Complex provides both in a balanced B formula.

Potassium… helps regulate blood pressure. OsteoMatrix will provide the potassium you need.

Vitamin D… is technically a hormone that aids in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and facilitates transmission of nerve impulses to the heart. Since most people are deficient, be sure to take Vita-D3.

CoQ10… an enzyme that slows down aging and degeneration of the organs can be found in CoQHeart.
